Description: THIS PHD THESIS AIMS TO IDENTIFY THE CHARACTERISTICS THAT SITUATE AND CONNECT STREET ART (GRAFFITI) AND OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE (FLOSS) AS DISRUPTIVE AND TRANSFORMATIVE PRACTICES IN THE PHYSICAL AND DIGITAL PUBLIC SPACE DURING THE PERIOD OF THE GREEK FINANCIAL DEBT CRISIS, 2009-2018.
GRAFFITI, AS AN INTERVENTIONIST GESTURE IN URBAN SPACE, PRODUCES AESTHETICS AND CRITICAL COMMENTARY BY EXPOSING IN PLAIN SIGHT THE HIERARCHICAL RELATIONS AND TENSIONS THAT SET THE TERMS OF EXCLUSION AND PARTICIPATION IN PUBLIC SPACE. AT THE SAME TIME, OPEN SOFTWARE IS A COMMON GOOD IN THE FIELD OF TECHNOLOGY, A STRUCTURAL ELEMENT OF THE DIGITAL SPACE, REALIZED THROUGH INTERCONNECTED COMMUNITIES OF PRODUCTION WITH THE AIM OF DISSEMINATING FREE KNOWLEDGE. BOTH OF THESE PRACTICES ARE BASED ON PEER-TO-PEER COMMUNITIES WHICH, THROUGH SELF-ORGANISATION, SET UP HORIZONTAL, COLLABORATIVE SYSTEMS OF EXCHANGE AND SHARING. IN TIMES OF CRISIS, THESE CONTEMPORARY CULTURAL PRACTICES EVEN PROBLEMATIZE THE ANALYTICAL CATEGORIES OF KNOWLEDGE AND POWER, WHILE THEIR COHERENCE AND IMPACT ON THE PUBLIC PHYSICAL AND DIGITAL SPACE IS INTENSIFIED.
THE AIM OF THE PROPOSED STUDY IS TO INVESTIGATE THE INTERACTION OF THESE PRACTICES BOTH IN THE FORMATION OF CONTEMPORARY, PARTICIPATORY EDUCATION AND IN THE PERCEPTION OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN URBAN AND DIGITAL SPACE DURING THE PERIOD UNDER CONSIDERATION.
THE PHD RESEARCH WILL STUDY AND DOCUMENT THE RECENT HISTORY OF GRAFFITI IN GREECE THROUGH THE PUBLICATION AND CIRCULATION OF INDEPENDENT GRAFFITI PUBLICATIONS AND INTERVIEWS WITH COMMUNITY MEMBERS. AT THE SAME TIME, THE DEVELOPMENT OF OPEN SOURCE CULTURE WILL BE HISTORICALLY EXAMINED, FOCUSING PRIMARILY ON THE FIELD OF ARCHITECTURE. CENTRAL TO THIS COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS IS THE NOTION OF THE COMMONS, AS A COHESIVE ELEMENT OF COMMUNITIES IN PERIODS OF ABRUPT HISTORICAL SHIFTS.
