Description: THE THESIS IS ABOUT CREATING AND IMPLEMENTING AN ADAPTABLE ARCHITECTURE SYSTEM OF NON-DEFINED FLEXIBILITY IN AN EXISTING APARTMENT. THE SYSTEM WILL INCLUDE THE CREATION OF A SHAPE GRAMMAR (SHAPE/ MAKING GRAMMAR) AND ITS ACTUATION THROUGH A SYSTEM OF MODULAR ROBOTIC UNITS. THE MAIN QUESTIONS OF THE THESIS ARE: A) WHO IS THE USER OF THE SYSTEM AND HOW DO THEY USE THE SYSTEM, B) CAN A SHAPE GRAMMAR SUPPORT THE ACTUATION OF THE VIRTUAL SPACE WHILE MAINTAINING THE USER’S CREATIVE FREEDOM? C) HOW DO MODULAR ROBOTIC UNITS RESPOND TO A SHAPE GRAMMAR? CAN THEY BE A MATERIALIZATION TOOL FOR THE VIRTUAL SPACE? THE THESIS APPROACH IS IMPORTANT AS IT FOLLOWS A HYBRID APPROACH OF THE ADAPTABLE SPACE BASED ON THE USER, THE DESIGN PROCESS, THE MATERIALIZATION TOOLS, AND THE EXISTING BUILDING STOCK. AND THE BALANCE BETWEEN THE SPACE’S ARCHITECTURAL IDENTITY AND THE USER’S CREATIVE FREEDOM IN NON-DETERMINISTIC SCENARIOS OF TRANSFORMATION. THE THESIS CONTRIBUTION LIES IN THE CREATION OF A RESEARCH FRAMEWORK ABOUT THE COMBINATION OF SHAPE GRAMMARS AND ROBOTIC SYSTEMS REGARDING THEIR IMPLEMENTATION IN ADAPTABLE ARCHITECTURE IN EXISTING BUILT SPACES. THE THESIS WILL FOLLOW A QUALITATIVE METHOD FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE SYSTEM AND THE STEPS WILL INCLUDE FIELD RESEARCH AND DATA COLLECTION, LITERATURE RESEARCH, AND SYSTEM SIMULATIONS (BOTH VIRTUAL AND PHYSICAL) WITH THE USE OF SUITABLE SOFTWARE AND HARDWARE.
