Description: | THE 4SSTB PROJECT OF ESA REGARDS THE CREATION OF A TEST-BED FOR FUTURE NEXT GENERATION SATCOM SYSTEMS. 4SSTB WILL DEFINE, SPECIFY AND DEVELOP THE BASIC CORE ELEMENTS OF AN INCREMENTAL 4S SYSTEM & SERVICES TEST BED (4SSTB) TO BE USED IN SUPPORT OF COMPLEX TELECOMMUNICATION SYSTEMS AND SERVICES DESIGN VERIFICATION AND VALIDATION. THE TESTBED WILL BE CAPABLE OF TESTING REAL APPLICATIONS AND SERVICES OVER IP NETWORKING, BUT ALSO THE UNDERLYING SUBSYSTEMS AT ALL LEVELS AS WELL AS SYSTEM FUNCTIONALITIES, INCLUDING BEAM/SATELLITE HANDOVERS OR NETWORK LOGONS. VARIOUS DESIGNS AND IMPLEMENTATION OPTIONS (FOR BOTH SPACE AND GROUND SEGMENTS) WILL BE CONSIDERED AND WILL BE TESTED, TOGETHER WITH VIRTUALIZED IMPLEMENTATIONS OF SATCOM SYSTEMS, INSERTION OF VIRTUAL NETWORK FUNCTIONS (VNF), AND HW IN THE LOOP (HIL). THE LATTER ASPECT IS ALSO RELATED TO THE ROLE OF MICROLAB/NTUA IN THE PROJECT, WHICH IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE PHYSICAL LAYER IMPLEMENTATION OF AIR INTERFACES TO THE TESTBED. SUCH IMPLEMENTATION WILL INVOLVE C/C++ AND VHDL CODING ON SDR PLATFORMS FOR TELECOM BASEBAND PROCESSING. |
