Description: MR. KOUMENIS WILL BE ACTIVE IN TWO PHASES/LEVELS. AT THE RESEARCH LEVEL, HE WILL COLLABORATE WITH MEMBERS OF THE DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS, FOCUSING ON APPLICATIONS OF PHYSICS IN BIOLOGY AND MEDICINE, SUCH AS PROTON THERAPY. PARTICULAR EMPHASIS WILL BE GIVEN TO THE PARTICIPATION OF POSTGRADUATE AND DOCTORAL STUDENTS OF THE SCHOOL WHO ARE WORKING ON OR INTERESTED IN WORKING ON RELATED TOPICS. THERE IS ALREADY AN ACTIVE COLLABORATION AND FUNDING FROM PROFESSOR K.A. GEORGAKILAS FOR STUDYING THE BIOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF PROTON THERAPY, ESPECIALLY THE NEW FLASH TECHNIQUE.AT THE TEACHING LEVEL, THE VISITING PROFESSOR, IF ASSIGNED BY THE SCHOOL, INTENDS TO TEACH A GRADUATE-LEVEL COURSE AIMED AT DOCTORAL, POSTGRADUATE, AND ADVANCED UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS OF NTUA (NATIONAL TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY OF ATHENS). THE COURSE WILL BE DIRECTED NOT ONLY AT STUDENTS OF THE SCHOOL OF APPLIED MATHEMATICAL AND PHYSICAL SCIENCES (SEMFE) BUT ALSO AT STUDENTS FROM OTHER SCHOOLS INTERESTED IN TOPICS SUCH AS THE BIOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF RADIATION ON HUMANS, MEDICAL PHYSICS, AND MODERN TECHNIQUES IN HADRON THERAPY. THE TOPICS THAT COULD BE COVERED IN SUCH A COURSE INCLUDE MODERN APPLICATIONS OF PHYSICS IN BIOLOGY AND MEDICINE, NEW PROTON THERAPY TECHNIQUES SUCH AS FLASH, FACTORS OF RADIATION RESISTANCE IN CERTAIN TUMORS SUCH AS THE ROLE OF HYPOXIA, AMONG OTHERS.
