Description: THE PROJECT EXAMINES THE EXPLOITATION OF SATELLITE IMAGERY (E.G. SENTINEL-2, LANDSAT 4-9) FOR THE ESTIMATION OF THE LAKE WATER AREA OF GREEK LAKES THROUGH INDEXES, SUCH AS NDWI AND ITS ALTERNATIVES. THE LAKES TO BE EXAMINED SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN THE IMPLEMENTATION CYCLES OF THE WATER FRAMEWORK DIRECTIVE. THE DESIRED FREQUENCY FOR THE LAKE AREA ESTIMATION SHOULD BE ONE MONTH. WHERE SUFFICIENT SATELLITE IMAGERY DATA IS NOT AVAILABLE, THE WATER AREA TIMESERIES WILL BE SUPPORTED BY SATELLITE RADAR DATA, E.G. SENTINEL-1. WATER AREA TIMESERIES WILL BE COMBINED WITH QUASI-SYCHRONOUS SATELLITE ALTIMETRY MEASUREMENTS, IN ORDER TO ESTIMATE THE WATER VOLUME VARIATION. IN CASES WHERE SATELLITE ALTIMETRY IS NOT AVAILABLE, WATER VOLUME VARIOTION WILL BE CALCULATED USING EXISTING BATHYMETRIC SURVEYS OF LAKES OR LEVEL RECORDINGS OR EMPIRICAL FUNCTIONS. THE PRODUCED TIMESERIES OF WATER AREA ARE EXPECTED TO SPAN BETWEEN FOUR DECADES, WHILE THE TIMESERIES OF VOLUME VARIATION ARE EXPECTED TO SPAN BETWEEN SEVERAL YEARS AND A FEW DECADES. THE ABOVEMENTIONED TIMESERIES WILL ALSO BE STATISTICALLY PROCCESSED, IN ORDER TO QUANTIFY THE MAGNITUDE OF CLIMATE CHANGE IMPACTS ON LAKE WATER. ADDITIONALLY, THE HYDROLOGIC REGIME OF THE LAKES WILL BE ASSESSED FOR ITS FUTURE MIDTERM TRENDS, USING A COMBINATION OF SATELLITE AND REANALYSIS (ERA-5LAND) DATA.
