Description: THE CURRENT PROJECT AIMS AT THE DEVELOPMENT AND OPTIMIZATION OF PLASMA ASSISTED CHEMICAL RECOVERY OF CARBON AND GLASS FIBERS FROM POLYMER COMPOSITES. TO ACHIEVE THIS GOAL VARIOUS TASKS WILL BE IMPLEMENTED:
(A) TEST DIFFERENT PLASMA CONFIGURATIONS IN CONTACT AND INSIDE THE SOLVENTS USED FOR THE COMPOSITES DISSOLUTION AND FIND THE
BEST SETUP FOR SOLVENT ACTIVATION AND SEPARATION OF FIBERS FROM POLYMER MATRIX. (B) SIMULATE THE WHOLE PROCESS (PLASMA, PLASMA INTERACTION WITH SOLVENT, LIQUID PHASE, INTERACTION OF SOLVENT WITH COMPOSITE) TO GET A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE MECHANISM OF MATRIX DISSOLUTION. (C) PROPOSE AND IMPLEMENT AN EXPERIMENTAL PLAN FOR THE CHARACTERIZATION OF RECOVERED FIBERS AND OF THE COMPOSITES THAT WILL BE MANUFACTURED FROM RETRIEVED FIBERS. (D) DEVELOP AND IMPLEMENT A TWO-SCALE ANALYTICAL/NUMERICAL MODEL FOR THE COMPUTATION OF THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF COMPOSITES MADE FROM RECYCLED FIBERS.
THE SUCCESSFUL ACCOMPLISHMENT OF PROJECT GOALS WILL HAVE SIGNIFICANT SCIENTIFIC AND SOCIAL IMPACT AS IT FACES THE MAJOR PROBLEMS OF THE ALREADY EXISTING TECHNOLOGIES FOR RECYCLING OF CARBON AND GLASS FIBERS FROM POLYMER COMPOSITES. THE MAIN TARGETS ARE:
(A) THE ENHANCEMENT OF THE RECYCLING RATES BY IMPLEMENTING PLASMA INSIDE OR IN CONTACT WITH THE CHEMICALS USED FOR COMPOSITES DISSOLUTION. (B) THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE PROCESS IN ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE AND WITHOUT EXTERNAL HEATING TO REDUCE ENERGY CONSUMPTION. (C) THE REDUCTION OF THE AMOUNT OF CHEMICALS THAT ARE USED AND RECOVER/REGENERATE SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF THEM. (D) THE UNDERSTANDING OF THE PROCESS MECHANISM AND OPTIMIZATION IN TERMS OF RECYCLING RATES AND FIBERS QUALITY. (E) THE RECOVERY OF FIBERS WITH GOOD MECHANICAL AND THEIR RE-USE IN COMPOSITES MANUFACTURING.
ALL THE ABOVE-MENTIONED TARGETS WILL SERVE THE MAIN GOAL I.E. THE DEVELOPMENT OF RELIABLE, REPRODUCIBLE AND ENVIRONMENTAL FRIENDLY PROCESS FOR COMPOSITES RECYCLING AND TREATMENT OF THE HUGE AMOUNT OF WASTES THAT ARE EXPECTED THE FOLLOWING YEARS.
