Description: THE AIM OF ENZYREMIX IS THE DEVELOPMENT OF NOVEL BIOPROCESSES CAPABLE OF SELECTIVELY BREAKING DOWN AND THUS SEPARATING SYNTHETIC POLYMERS, SUCH AS PLA AND PET, FOR THE CHEMOENZYMATIC RECYCLING OF COMPLEX PACKAGING WASTE STREAMS, SUCH AS MIXED PLASTICS. THE EMPHASIS WILL BE GIVEN ON THE MIXTURES OF PLA/PET, BOTH MATERIALS USED FOR TRANSPARENT BOTTLES MANUFACTURE. THE SPECIFIC CASE-STUDY HAS BEEN SELECTED DUE TO THE ANTICIPATED NEGATIVE EFFECT OF THE INCREASED PLA OCCURRENCE IN THE EXISTING SUCCESSFUL PET RECYCLING SCHEMES. THE ABOVE WILL ENABLE A PARADIGM STEP IN THE FRAME OF A CIRCULAR PLASTICS ECONOMY: WHERE, THROUGH DEVELOPING INNOVATIVE METHODOLOGIES FOR MIXED PLASTICS WASTE, DEPOLYMERISED MONOMERS AND OLIGOMERS CAN BE CHEMICALLY AND BIOLOGICALLY RE-POLYMERISED FROM POST-CONSUMER MATERIALS. THIS PROOF-OF-CONCEPT METHODOLOGY WILL LEAD TO A BREAKTHROUGH IN DELIVERING REGENERATED BIOMATERIALS, SUCH AS POLYHYDROXYALKANOATES AND NANOCELLULOSE, WHICH ARE FULLY SUSTAINABLE AND CAN HAVE EQUIVALENT PROPERTIES TO VIRGIN FOSSIL-BASED MATERIALS
