Description: | THE RESEARCH PROJECT AIMS TO INVESTIGATE THE BEHAVIOUR OF SOIL AND ROCK FORMATIONS IN CIVIL ENGINEERING INFRASTRUCTURE WORKS. THE INVESTIGATION WILL BE PERFORMED USING FIELD RECONESSANCE METHODS, LABORATORY TECHNIQUES AND ANALYTICAL CALCULATIONS IN ORDER TO DETERMINE THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES AND BEHAVIOR OF GEOMATERIALS UNDER DIFFERENT LOADING CONDITIONS. THE FIELD METHODS INCLUDE IN SITU TESTS, GEOLOGICAL MAPPING AND USE OF NEW TECHNOLOGIES FOR THE SURVEILANCE OF GROUND MOVEMENTS AND USE OF SATELITE MONITORING METHODS. THE LABORATORY METHODS INCLUDE TESTING OF ROCKS (INTACT AND DISCGNTINUIFIES) IN ORDER TO DETERMINE THEIR PHYSICAL AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES (MAINLY STRENGTH AND DEFORMABILITY). IN ORDER TO DETERMINE THE RESPONSE OF GEOMATERIALS, ANALYTICAL AND COMPUTATIONAL METHODS WILL BE USED TO ACCOUNT FOR DIFFERENT LOADING CONDITIONS, SUCH AS STATIC LOADING, WITH PRESENCE OF WATER AND SEISMIC LOADING. THE PROJECT WILL ALSO FOCUS ON DETERMINING THE CHANGE OF BEHAVIOR IN ABRUPT CHANGES DUE TO EXTREME WEATHER AND CLIMATE CHANGE EFFECT AS WELL AS PROTECTION FROM GEOHAZARDS, I.E. LANDSLIDES AND ROCKFALLS |
