Description: | A PILOT PHASE OF MEASUREMENTS IS CARRIED OUT ON A STANDARD METAL RAILWAY BRIDGE, TO SYSTEMATICALLY DOCUMENT AND IDENTIFY WEAR AND DAMAGES THROUGH NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING. AS PART OF THIS PROGRAM, MATERIALS, DAMAGE, DECAY AND WEAR WILL BE DOCUMENTED USING AN ARRAY OF NON-DESTRUCTIVE AND ANALYTICAL TECHNIQUES. IN PARTICULAR, THE FOLLOWING TECHNIQUES WILL BE APPLIED AT THE PILOT SCALE FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE SPECIFICATIONS: MACROSCOPIC INSPECTION, HARDNESS TESTS, ULTRASONIC TESTS, EDDY CURRENT MEASUREMENTS, INFRARED THERMOGRAPHY, PORTABLE VIDEO-MICROSCOPY, MEASUREMENT OF CORROSION POTENTIAL AND 3-DIMENSIONAL MAPPING OF DAMAGED AREAS WITH THE USE OF A LASER SCANNER SYSTEM. UPON COMPLETION OF THE PILOT MEASUREMENTS ON A METAL BRIDGE TO BE CHOSEN BY O.S.E. FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THIS STUDY, THE SPECIFICATIONS OF THE NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING AND DAMAGE DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM WILL BE DEVELOPED FOR THE PERIODIC AND SPECIAL ISSUE INSPECTIONS OF THE O.S.E. METAL BRIDGES, UTILIZING THE RESULTS AND FINDINGS OF THIS STUDY. |
