Description: A MAJOR CONCERN IN ENGINEERING DESIGN IS WHETHER A STRUCTURE OR A MACHINE COMPONENT CAN CARRY THE APPLIED LOADS AND WITH WHICH SAFETY MARGIN, OR WHETHER IT WILL BECOME UNSERVICEABLE DUE TO COLLAPSE OR EXCESSIVE INELASTIC DEFORMATIONS. THUS, LIMIT STATES FORM THE BASIS OF ALL CONTEMPORARY DESIGN CODES FOR BOTH CIVIL AND MECHANICAL ENGINEERING STRUCTURES AND MATERIALS. THESE STATES ARE RELATED WITH ANY STRUCTURAL MATERIAL SUCH AS METALS, CONCRETE, SOIL, COMPOSITES, NANOMATERIALS ETC. AND ARE THUS LINKED WITH ADVANCED NON-LINEAR MATERIAL MODELLING, LIKE VISCOUS EFFECTS, HARDENING AND SOFTENING, NON-ASSOCIATED PLASTIC FLOW RULES, MATERIAL DAMAGE, ETC. THE ASSESSMENT OF THESE STATES IN THE FIELD OF STRUCTURAL MECHANICS IS CONNECTED WITH ADVANCED OPTIMIZATION AND COMPUTATIONAL ALGORITHMS AS, FOR EXAMPLE, DIRECT METHODS. SCIENTISTS FROM REKNOWN UNIVERSITIES WORKING IN RESEARCH IN THE THESE METHODS EXCHAGE THEIR IDEAS AND DISCUSS THE STATE OF THE ART IN WORKSHOPS HELD VERY REGULARLYIN DIFFERENT PLACES. THE DM 2024 WORKSHOP IS THE 8TH IN THE SERIES WITH THE PREVIOUS WORKSHOPS HAVE BEEN HELD IN AACHEN 2007, LILLE 2009, ATHENS 2012, REGGIO CALABRIA 2013, OXFORD 2015, CRACOW 2019 AND CONSENZA 2022
