Description: THE ISLAND OF LESVOS IS THE THIRD LARGEST ISLAND IN GREECE AFTER CRETE AND EVIA, WITH AN AREA OF 1,636 SQ. KM AND A COASTLINE OF 459 KM. ITS COASTS ARE MOSTLY ROCKY BUT THERE ARE ALSO IMPORTANT BEACHES. THERE ARE TWO GULFS, THE GULF OF GERA AND THE GULF OF KALLONI. COASTAL SEDIMENTS VARY FROM FINE SAND TO GRAVELL. FROM A GEOLOGICAL POINT OF VIEW, THE NORTHERN AND WESTERN PARTS ARE VOLCANIC, WHILE THE EASTERN AND SOUTHERN PARTS OF THE ISLAND CONSIST OF METAMORPHIC ROCKS. IN THIS RESEARCH PROGRAM, A RECORD WILL BE MADE OF THE PROBLEMATIC COASTS WITH THEIR ELEMENTS SUCH AS THE SEDIMENT, THE MORPHOLOGY OF THE COAST, THE DIMENSIONS OF THE COAST, WHILE THE PROBLEMS ARISING MAINLY FROM MARINE EROSION WILL BE IDENTIFIED. THE AIM IS THE PRIORITIZION OF THE NEEDS FOR INTERVENTIONS WITH COASTAL PROTECTION WORKS.
