Description: ΤHIS PROJECT AIMS AT THE EXPERIMENTAL AND THEORETICAL STUDY OF THE 243AM(N,F) REACTION CROSS SECTION. THE MEASUREMENTS WILL BE PERFORMED AT THE CERN N_TOF FACILITY, IMPLEMENTING MICROMEGAS DETECTORS AND ESPECIALLY DESIGNED, HIGH PURITY MONO-ISOTOPIC 243AM TARGETS, WHICH WILL BE PRODUCED AND CHARACTERIZED AT THE JRC-GEEL (BELGIUM).
FURTHERMORE, THE OPTIMIZATION OF THE MICROMEGAS DETECTORS WILL BE CARRIED OUT AT THE TANDEM ACCELERATOR FACILITY OF THE NCSR “DEMOKRITOS”. THE 243AM(N,F) REACTION IS VERY IMPORTANT BOTH FOR BASIC NUCLEAR PHYSICS AND NUCLEAR TECHNOLOGY.
IN THIS PROJECT, THE COMBINATION OF THE BEST FACILITIES, TECHNOLOGIES AND EXPERTS IN EUROPE WILL JOIN THEIR EFFORTS TO FULFIL THE OBJECTIVES. BOTH EXPERIMENTAL AREAS (EAR-1 AND EAR-2) AT THE CERN N_TOF FACILITY WILL BE USED, FULLY EXPLOITING THEIR SPECIAL FEATURES TO PRODUCE FOR THE FIRST TIME HIGH ACCURACY AND HIGH RESOLUTION DATASET OF THE 243AM(N,F) REACTION, COVERING THE NEUTRON ENERGY RANGE OF 10 ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE FROM THERMAL UP TO HUNDREDS OF MEV. THE DATA WILL BE MADE AVAILABLE TO THE SCIENTIFIC COMMUNITY, ALONG WITH PHENOMENOLOGICAL MODEL CALCULATIONS (STATISTICAL AND R-MATRIX), THUS COVERING THE NEEDS OF THE NUCLEAR REACTOR TECHNOLOGY BUT ALSO OF THE COMPLETE THEORETICAL STUDY OF THE REACTION.
