Description: | UTILIZING SIGNIFICANT QUANTITIES OF ORGANIC WASTE GENERATED ON THE PLANET CAN MITIGATE HUMAN HEALTH BURDENS AND POSITIVELY IMPACT THE ENVIRONMENT, ECONOMY, AND SOCIAL WELFARE. THIS DOCTORAL THESIS DEVELOPS A METHODOLOGY FOR ANALYZING THE SUSTAINABILITY OF EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES FOR ORGANIC WASTE UTILIZATION THROUGH BIOREFINERIES, INTEGRATING ECONOMIC, ENVIRONMENTAL, AND SOCIAL CRITERIA. THE "SAFE AND SUSTAINABLE BY DESIGN" APPROACH WILL ENHANCE EXISTING SUSTAINABILITY ANALYSIS METHODS, AIDING IN THE ASSESSMENT OF NEW TECHNOLOGIES AND DECISION-MAKING FOR MORE SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS. THE NEW METHOD WILL BE REPLICABLE, FLEXIBLE, AND APPLICABLE TO DIFFERENT FEEDSTOCKS AND TECHNOLOGIES, INTRODUCING ADDITIONAL CIRCULARITY AND INDUSTRIAL SYMBIOSIS INDICATORS. LITERATURE REVIEW WILL PLAY A SIGNIFICANT ROLE, EVALUATING THE CURRENT SITUATION AND SELECTING THE MOST SIGNIFICANT STREAMS OF ORGANIC WASTE IN THE EU FOR CASE STUDIES, WHOSE SUSTAINABILITY ANALYSIS WILL CONTRIBUTE TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEW VALUE CHAINS IN THE LIFE CYCLE OF RAW MATERIALS/WASTE. |
